06, 2008 Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner warned consumers Thursday to check their insurance coverage if they ve recently bought policies from agents with Brooke Corp., Kansas-based insurer. More than 200 franchised Brooke agencies operate in California. Its agents may operate and advertise as Brooke Insurance and Financial Services, Brooke Auto Insurance or Brooke Insurance. Brooke filed for Chapter 11 protection with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Kansas City on Oct. 28. Poizner said the bankruptcy is unlikely to affect California residents, but he urged consumers to check their coverage immediately because several Brooke franchise offices closed in California recently. He said consumers who bought Brooke policies should check their coverage with the insurer -- which is still operating -- or the Brooke agent from whom they bought it, especially if they don t yet have proof of coverage. I certainly hope that was a simple semantic error on President Obama s part. Americans neither need nor want health insurance. What they need, what they want, is affordable health CARE. Hoping it is just a matter of semantics I am sure President Obama didn t mean that all Americans should have the same right to pay outrageous copayments for their prescriptions. But the result is that patients may have to spend more for a drug than they pay for their mortgages, more, in some cases, than their monthly incomes. The system, often called Tier 4, began in earnest with Medicare drug plans and spread rapidly. It is now incorporated into 86 percent of those plans. Some have even higher co-payments for certain drugs, a Tier 5. Now Tier 4 is also showing up in insurance that people buy on their own or acquire through employers, said Dan Mendelson of Avalere Health, a research organization in Washington. It is the fastest-growing segment in private insurance, Mr. Mendelson said. Five years ago it was virtually nonexistent in private plans, he said. Now 10 percent of them have Tier 4 drug categories. I am sure he meant that all Americans should be able to have access to affordable medecine.
